Gemini Revenue Attribution

Gemini revenue is not missing.
It is being credited to SEO.

ChatGPT revenue disappears into Direct, which at least looks wrong. Gemini and Google AI Mode referrals land inside google / organic — a channel that already exists, already has an owner, and never gets audited. Attrifast splits those visits back out and joins them to real Stripe payments.

TL;DR

  • Gemini and Google AI Mode referrals do not arrive as a separate source. They arrive under a Google referrer, so GA4 files them in google / organic and hands the revenue to your SEO line.
  • One engine, three referrer signatures: gemini.google.com for chat, www.google.com for AI Mode and AI Overviews, and frequently nothing at all from the Android and Workspace integrations.
  • A GA4 custom channel grouping catches the first signature and structurally cannot catch the second — an AI Mode click and a blue-link click differ in no field GA4 exposes.
  • Gemini is the #2 AI traffic source at ~12% of AI sessions but #4 of five on revenue per visit at $0.41 in the Attrifast 200-site benchmark. Volume without a revenue split flatters it.
  • Attrifast joins each classified Gemini session to the Stripe payment it produced, so Gemini gets its own revenue line. 7-day free trial, $9.99/mo, 2-minute setup.

Still working out which of your visits come from Gemini in the first place? Detection comes before attribution, and it has its own guide: how to track Gemini traffic.

Why Gemini revenue is silently credited to SEO

Every other AI engine has a visibility problem. Gemini has an accounting problem, which is harder to notice and easier to act on wrongly.

When ChatGPT strips its referrer, the visit falls into Direct — a bucket everyone already distrusts. Somebody eventually asks why Direct is growing, and the investigation starts. Gemini produces no such moment. Because Google AI Mode and AI Overviews citations are served from Google's own domain, the click arrives with source=google and medium=organic. GA4 files it under Organic Search, exactly as it files a blue-link click, and the money lands on a line that already had an owner and a budget.

Nobody opens a ticket about a channel that is over-performing. The SEO programme appears to be compounding; in reality some share of that compounding is a different acquisition surface with different content requirements, a different competitive set, and — in our data — materially different unit economics. Teams then reinvest in keyword work to defend gains that came from being cited inside an AI answer, which is a distinct discipline with distinct levers.

The distortion runs in both directions. Gemini's $0.41 revenue per visit sits below what most sites earn from genuine organic search, so blending it into the organic line simultaneously inflates the sessions SEO appears to have won and dilutes the revenue per visit it appears to produce. The channel looks bigger and cheaper than it is, and the correction is invisible until the two are separated.

The referrer signatures: one engine, four destinations

Gemini reaches your site through several surfaces, and each one hands your analytics a different story. Only the first row is unambiguous.

SurfaceReferrer receivedWhere GA4 files itSeparable by rule?
Gemini chat (web)gemini.google.comReferral from a Google propertyYes — clean referrer match
Google AI Modewww.google.comgoogle / organicNo — identical to a blue-link click
AI Overviews citationwww.google.comgoogle / organicNo — identical to a blue-link click
Gemini in Android, Gmail, Docsoften strippedDirect / (none)No — falls into the Direct bucket
Google-Extended crawleruser-agent only, no sessionShould be filtered entirelyN/A — never a human visit

The overlap in rows two and three is the whole problem. AI Mode is a conversational search surface that replaces the results page rather than sitting on top of it, and its outbound clicks carry the same Google referrer as any other search click. The mechanics of that referrer chain, and what you can and cannot recover from it, are worked through in detail in our Google AI Mode tracking guide.

Why a GA4 channel grouping cannot split Gemini cleanly

This is the fix most teams reach for first. It is worth understanding exactly where its ceiling is before you spend an afternoon on it.

What a channel rule can catch

A custom channel group is a rule engine over source, medium, and campaign. A condition on source contains gemini.google.com works, and it will route standalone Gemini chat clicks into an AI channel of your own naming. If chat were the whole of Gemini, a channel grouping would genuinely be enough, and this page would not need to exist.

What no channel rule can catch

There is no rule that separates an AI Mode click from a blue-link click, because there is no field in which they differ: same source, same medium, no campaign, no surface parameter appended by Google. You cannot write a condition on a distinction the data does not carry. Search Console offers no escape either — AI Mode impressions and clicks are folded into the Web search type totals rather than broken out.

So the honest ceiling of a GA4-only approach is: chat split out, the in-Search AI surfaces still merged into organic, the app and Workspace traffic still sitting in Direct — and no revenue attached to any of it, because GA4 reports sessions and events, not the payments your billing system actually captured. Separating the surfaces requires signals beyond source and medium: landing-page depth, parameter patterns, and behavioural fingerprints, applied at the moment of arrival and labelled honestly as heuristics rather than dressed up as certainty. If you want the difference between the two in-Search surfaces spelled out before you decide how much precision you need, our comparison of Google AI Mode versus AI Overviews covers trigger behaviour, citation patterns, and referrer signals side by side.

What Gemini traffic is actually worth

Figures from the Attrifast 200-site benchmark — first-party attribution data joined to payments across SaaS and e-commerce sites.

~12%

Gemini share of AI session volume in the Attrifast 200-site benchmark — the second-largest AI traffic source behind ChatGPT.

$0.41

Gemini Revenue Per Visitor, fourth of five surfaces: Perplexity $1.42, Claude $1.18, ChatGPT $0.87, Gemini $0.41, AI Overviews $0.29.

2.7% vs 1.4%

AI-referred traffic converts at 2.7% against 1.4% for Google organic on B2B SaaS sites in the same cohort.

64%

Median rate by which SMBs undercount AI traffic on stock analytics — the undercount that hands Gemini revenue to SEO.

Read the two headline numbers together and Gemini's strategic position becomes clear: it is the AI surface with the widest distribution and the thinnest per-visit value. Google ships it through Search, Chrome, Android, Gmail, and Docs, so the volume arrives whether or not you court it, and it skews consumer and productivity rather than evaluative. That mix is a perfectly good reason to invest less effort in Gemini than in Perplexity — but it is a decision you can only make once Gemini has a revenue line of its own, which is what the full per-engine AI revenue attribution view provides. Methodology and cohort composition live on the Attrifast research page.

How the Stripe join produces per-engine revenue

Classification alone tells you how many visits came from Gemini. The payment join is what turns that count into a dollar figure you can compare against organic search.

1

A cookieless ID on first visit

The Attrifast snippet assigns each visitor a first-party ID stored in localStorage on your own domain. No third-party cookies, no fingerprinting, no consent banner. The ID survives across sessions, so a Gemini visit in week one still carries credit for a purchase in week four.

2

The Google AI surface is classified at arrival

Gemini chat is matched exactly on its gemini.google.com referrer. AI Mode and AI Overviews arrive under a plain google.com referrer, so they are separated with landing-page depth, parameter, and behavioural heuristics — and labelled as heuristic rather than presented as certainty.

3

Stripe or Shopify joins the money

Connect Stripe with a restricted API key and webhooks are configured for you, or connect a Shopify store. Every payment, subscription, and upgrade event is matched server-side to the paying visitor and their full session history.

4

Gemini becomes its own revenue line

Gemini gets a row of its own: visits, conversions, revenue, and RPV, under first-touch and last-touch models. Google organic keeps only the revenue it actually earned, and the two are finally comparable on the same dashboard.

Stripe on its own cannot do this. It records the payment perfectly and never sees the traffic source, so no Stripe report can tell you which customers arrived through an AI answer. The join has to be built on the traffic side and matched server-side at payment time — which is the entire product.

Google-Extended is not Gemini traffic

A small distinction with an outsized effect on the denominator of every metric on this page.

Google-Extended is the user-agent that controls whether your content informs Gemini's answers and training. It is a robot: it fetches pages, buys nothing, and produces no payment to attribute. If those fetches are counted as human sessions, your Gemini visit count inflates while attributed revenue stays flat, and your measured revenue per visit collapses toward zero for reasons that have nothing to do with the channel's quality. Attrifast filters the AI crawler user-agents out of human sessions and reports crawl activity on its own surface, where crawl frequency is a useful leading indicator rather than a contaminant. The specific ranges, robots.txt behaviour, and opt-out consequences are documented on our Google-Extended crawler reference.

What Gemini attribution cannot tell you

Scoping matters more here than for any other engine, because Google controls both the referrer and the surface.

The AI Mode and AI Overviews split is a heuristic, not a measurement. Gemini chat is matched exactly on its referrer; the in-Search surfaces are inferred from landing-page depth and behavioural pattern, and any vendor claiming a byte-level certain split on a plain google.com referrer is describing an inference in the language of a measurement. Attrifast labels those rows as heuristic so you can weight them accordingly.

Zero-click influence stays invisible, as it does everywhere. When Gemini summarises your pricing inside an AI Overview and the reader never clicks, or reads about you in the Workspace side panel and types your URL from memory next Tuesday, there is no session to classify and no join to make. The only practical probe is asking: a "how did you hear about us?" field at signup, cross-referenced against your attributed AI revenue. A large gap between the two is your unmeasurable in-answer influence — real, and structurally outside the reach of referrer-based attribution.

And the Android, Gmail, and Docs integrations will keep dropping some visits into Direct with no referrer at all. Those are recoverable only in aggregate, by watching how the Direct bucket moves against your classified AI volume, not case by case. Attribution that admits its edges is more useful than attribution that hides them.

Gemini revenue attribution FAQ

Why does Gemini traffic show up as Google organic instead of its own channel?

Because the referrer Google sends is a Google domain. GA4 classifies a session by its source and medium, and a click out of Google AI Mode or an AI Overviews citation arrives as source=google, medium=organic — byte-for-byte the same as a blue-link click. Gemini chat is slightly different: it sends gemini.google.com, which GA4 treats as a referral from a Google property and, under the default channel group, still rolls up under Google. The practical result is the same either way: the revenue is not lost, it is misfiled, and your SEO line absorbs it.

What referrer does Gemini send?

Three different signatures depending on the surface. Gemini chat on the web sends gemini.google.com, the one clean signal in the set. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews citations send www.google.com with no surface parameter attached, so they are indistinguishable from organic search at the referrer level. Gemini inside the Android app, the Workspace side panel, Gmail, and Docs frequently sends no referrer at all, which drops those visits into Direct instead. One engine, three destinations in a default analytics setup.

Can I build a GA4 channel grouping that isolates Gemini?

Only partially, and the part it misses is the larger one. A custom channel group is a rule engine over source, medium, and campaign, so you can write a rule that catches source contains gemini.google.com and route it to an AI channel. You cannot write a rule that separates an AI Mode click from a blue-link click, because there is no field in which they differ — same source, same medium, no campaign, no surface parameter. Search Console does not rescue it either: AI Mode impressions and clicks are folded into the Web search type totals rather than reported separately. So the ceiling of a GA4-only approach is Gemini chat split out, in-Search AI surfaces still merged into organic, and no revenue on any of it.

How do I attribute Gemini revenue to Stripe payments?

You need two halves joined. On the traffic half, Attrifast assigns each visitor a cookieless first-party ID stored in localStorage and classifies the arriving surface — Gemini chat by referrer, AI Mode and AI Overviews by a labelled heuristic. On the payment half, you paste a Stripe restricted key and webhooks are configured automatically; Shopify connects the same way. When a payment event fires it is matched to the paying visitor and their full session history, so a Gemini session from three weeks ago still gets credit under the first-touch model. Setup takes about 2 minutes.

Is Gemini traffic worth attributing if its revenue per visit is low?

Yes, and low RPV is the reason rather than the objection. In the Attrifast 200-site benchmark Gemini is the second-largest AI traffic source at roughly 12% of AI sessions but ranks fourth of five on Revenue Per Visitor at $0.41, behind Perplexity at $1.42, Claude at $1.18, and ChatGPT at $0.87, ahead of AI Overviews at $0.29. Folded into organic, that volume inflates the sessions your SEO programme appears to have earned while quietly diluting its measured revenue per visit. Splitting Gemini out fixes two numbers at once: you learn what Gemini is worth, and your organic figures stop lying to you.

Is Gemini revenue the same as Google AI Overviews revenue?

No. They are separate surfaces with separate economics and Attrifast keeps them as separate revenue lines. Gemini is the standalone assistant, reached at gemini.google.com or through Android and Workspace. AI Overviews is the summary block rendered above conventional results, and AI Mode is the conversational search experience that replaces the results page entirely. In the benchmark, AI Overviews posts the lowest RPV of any surface at $0.29 versus Gemini at $0.41 — a gap you can only act on if the two are never averaged together.

Does Gemini traffic convert to paying customers?

It does, though at lower value per visit than the other chat engines. Across B2B SaaS sites in the Attrifast 200-site benchmark, AI-referred traffic as a whole converts at 2.7% versus 1.4% for Google organic, so the AI channel outperforms search on conversion rate even where it trails on revenue per visit. Gemini skews toward consumer search and productivity use cases because of where Google distributes it, which is the most plausible explanation for its $0.41 RPV sitting below ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Does Google-Extended traffic count toward Gemini revenue?

No, and it must be excluded or your Gemini numbers inflate. Google-Extended is a crawler user-agent, not a human visitor: it fetches pages to inform Gemini grounding and training, buys nothing, and produces no payment to attribute. Attrifast filters Google-Extended and the other AI crawler user-agents out of human session counts and reports the crawl separately, so crawler hits never land in the denominator of your Gemini revenue per visit.
